Symptom: I’m using Outlook 2007, and I can’t use the Send To function if Outlook is closed. If Outlook is open, it works fine. If Outlook is closed, then any attempt to create a message using the normal MAPI Send To function fails to open. I see Outlook is running in Task Manager, but it never opens a window.

For Example: If I use Word 2007 and select Send – Email, Word sits around forever waiting for Outlook to open. If I finally kill Outlook in Task Manager, then Word pops back with the message Word couldn’t send mail because of MAPI failure: “Unspecified error.”

I have similar problems using the Windows XP right-click “Sent To – Mail Recipient” feature.

If Outlook is alreay open, it all works perfectly.

After many attempts to clean up, repair Office, knowledge base searches, etc… I finally found the answer buried at the bottom of a forum posting here: http://office-outlook.com/outlook-forum/index.php?t=msg&th=133715/

Uninstalling Apples Mobile Device Support (part of an Itunes install) fixed it.

Weird. I uninstalled that component and all is well now.

Other search terms to help find this article: MAPI Unspecified Error, can’t send from QuickBooks, Can’t use Send To if Outlook is closed. Outlook 2007
